In the 1880’s, the Arbuckle Coffee Company (best known for their patented coffee-roasting machine) began including trading cards with their coffee. The cards held advertising on one side and a lithographic image on the other. The “trade” cards were part of the beginning of what is now known as “trading cards”. This particular card was part of a “state series”. Customers were encouraged to collect all fifty state cards.
