These four illustrations from Harper’s Weekly, a New York newspaper that reprinted these pictures in 1868 as part of “Pictoral History of the Great Rebellion”, are from original prints, or wood engravings, depicting Fort Fisher, Wilmington and Its Approaches, Landing of the Troops Above Fort Fisher, and the Transport Fleet Off Federal Point. Each is professionally hand-colored. Harper’s Weekly, published in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, featured drawings by some of America’s finest illustrators, such as Winslow Homer.
